It’s true, I am giving away my beloved 1990 Chevy Suburban 1500 4x4. I’ve cherished this thing so much for road trips and camping, and you’ve seen it in several episodes on my channel. These days it just sits in front of the house as I drive other old cars and trucks, so it’s time for one of you to enjoy this fantastic rig. This Suburban has 207,000-plus miles on it, but it’s surprisingly clean and functional. The body is very straight, though the clear coat is peeling off pretty much everywhere. No worry, it’ll all be gone soon. The interior is astonishingly good for its age and is super comfortable, though the headliner sags. I just spent $1,200 to ensure the air conditioning blows very cold. All the gauges and lights and gadgets work—even the cruise control! The wiper switch is a little hinky.

As for powertrain, this has a TBI 350 that just passed a California smog check. It smokes on fireup sometimes, and only when cold. Must be a valve seal. It’s pretty gutless, but that’s how they were new. I spent $3,000 on a 700R-4 transmission rebuild and new torque converter about 1,000 miles ago. The transfer case is a perfectly operating NP241 and the axles are 10-bolts with 3.73 gears.

In summary, it’s far from perfect, but it’s also a survivor in above average condition. I suspect you can take the Suburban and the $5,000 and drive it anywhere you can dream up.
