This ‘70s-style blown big-block Chevy became famous worldwide completely by accident. This was just one of many engines to have lived in my 1967 Crusher Camaro. The car was well known from magazine coverage, but the big-block was in it when the Camaro started being seen on TV, so there’s a whole generation of people who only knew the car from video and only knew it with the big-block. They were so disappointed when I pulled out the supercharged Rat motor, so I ended up stabbing the engine into my 1969 Impala coupe. Before I could even stop them, people were calling it the Crusher Impala! And as it turns out, the Impala is also one of the most fun cars ever, all thanks to the engine.

So what exactly is this epic hunk of metal? It’s a big-block Chevy based on a 454 and stroked to 489ci. It has cheap guts, with a cast crank, basic forged rods and pistons, and old Holley aluminum oval-port heads. It has a very tame hydraulic roller cam and a huge Weiand 8-71 supercharger with a pair of Holley 850 double-pumper carbs. The retro vibe comes from those great Moroso gold valve covers (no longer made!), t-bar fasteners, the satin blower, and Mr Gasket velocity stacks! Depending on boost, the mill makes between 550 and 700 hp. In the Camaro it blasted the quarter in 10.60 seconds, and it runs 11.47 in the Impala.
